Tommy’s is calling for babies, toddlers and young children to make a big splash for cash this summer, by getting involved in Tommy’s Splashaton 2010.
Young “splashers” are encouraged to ask friends and family to sponsor them to “splash” the length or width of the pool during the fun-filled, free event. All money raised will go to baby charity Tommy’s, which funds research into pregnancy complications.
Tommy’s Splashaton is sponsored by Splash About (the children’s safety swimwear specialists) and is a great chance for young children to have fun while raising money to help save babies’ lives. After more than ten “splashing” years, Tommy’s is hoping to beat last year’s Splashaton total of £227,000 and make this summer’s event the most successful yet. Beating this target will raise funds for vital research into the causes of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth – helping to save thousands of babies’ lives.
Tommy’s is offering a range of fantastic prizes for all those taking part. Every little “splasher” to raise over £50 and return their sponsorship form by 31 August 2010 will receive a special Tommy’s prize. As a special thank you, the top fundraising “splasher” will receive a prize pack from Splash About, full of goodies worth £200 – including a float jacket, UV goggles and swimwear.
Jane Brewin, Chief Executive of Tommy’s, says: “ Currently 1 in 4 women will lose a baby every year in the UK, so we really value each little splash made throughout Splashaton, as these splashes raise money that will ultimately go on to save babies’ lives.”
Getting involved couldn’t be simpler: call the sponsorship hotline on 020 7398 3482, or visit www.splashaton.org for more information, or just turn up to one of the above sessions and make a splash!
Worthing Leisure Centre will be hosting the Night to Remember fundraising event in June.

Last year 1200 ladies dressed in pink t-shirts were ‘Night to Remember’ stars and took to the streets of Worthing to walk 13.1 miles and raising over £225,000 for St Barnabas House. Take up the challenge and gather your girlfriends for a girls’ 'Night to Remember' - a ladies only half marathon night walk starting at Midnight on Saturday 19th June 2010 from Worthing Leisure Centre.
To register please visit www.nighttoremember.org.uk or call The Events Team on 01903 871817.

On behalf of the Mayor of Worthing, welcome to the annual Mayor’s Swimarathon. Over the last 10 years this event has proved to be very popular, with more than £50,000 being raised for local charities.
This year the Mayor is supporting St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House Hospices, Queen Alexandra Hospital Home for Disabled ex-Servicemen and Women and two smaller charities – Street Pastors and Christians Against Poverty.
Our aim is to raise as much money as possible but we want you to have fun as well. To help you have an enjoyable evening, please bear the following suggestions in mind:-
Pool Times
The event will start at 6 pm on Saturday 6 February and Saturday 27 February. Call out of the pool will be 9.30 pm on both days.
Please indicate on the Registration form the start time you would prefer. These will be booked on a first come, first served basis with a minimum of 1.5 hours pool time available (a band system will be in operation). We will contact you if we are unable to offer you your chosen start time.
Please Note: whilst every effort will be made to accommodate swimmers not using the booking system, please expect a delay to the start of your swim.
Booking Forms
Forms are available from your School, at the Aquarena, Worthing Leisure Centre and Field Place. You can download the forms at the bottom of this page and print off and return to Angie Bowyer at the Aquarena, complete an e-form or you can book online from Friday 15 January 2010.
On the Day
We recommend you arrive to register at least 20 minutes before your swimming start time. You must register in the Fitness Studio where you can collect a copy of your Registration Form and a band (to be worn whilst swimming). You will also be allocated a swimming lane and you must stay in that lane unless you are told otherwise. Please hand the Registration Form to the person counting your lengths.
Please follow any instructions given to you by the Lifeguards. You must not get into the water until the lifeguards are present. Your swim starts the moment you get into the water and ends the moment you come out and once you are out, you may not get back in the water. During your swim you may stop at either end of the lane for a breather. Please feel free to bring your own plastic bottle of water (cups of water will not be available).
Sponsorship Money
The aim of this event is to raise money for charity – it is your responsibility to obtain sponsors and collect the money afterwards. All sponsorship money must be paid in by Friday 9 April 2010.
If the money is not paid in by this date you will not receive a certificate or medal until the money is paid. If, for any reason, you cannot pay the money by the date, ie you are still collecting, please telephone Sue Richardson on 01903 221018 as soon as possible. If you mislay your Sponsor Form, a donation will be accepted in lieu of sponsorship. The amount of sponsorship is entirely a matter for the sponsor and we will not enter any correspondence (see separate sheet for payment instructions).

The worst earthquake to hit Haiti in 200 years — an enormous earthquake of 7.0 magnitude — has struck the country. An estimated 1.8 million residents were violently shaken by an earthquake on 12 January. The earthquake hit about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, the densely-populated Haitian capital, causing massive damage to property and loss of life.

Plans for Worthing’s new £17 million swimming pool and leisure complex have moved into the fast lane with a planning application due to be submitted by the end of May.
Following the planning process contractors are expected to start building work on site in April 2011 with the complex completed by February 2013.
Leader of Worthing Borough Council, Marine said:
“In these difficult financial times we have to get maximum value for our £17 million budget. The town has waited many years for its new pool and it is now becoming a reality. We will end up with enhanced facilities and the best health and fitness suite on the south coast.
“Specifications and costings are also being developed by the design team to ensure the town gets as much as it can for its money.”
Wilkinson Eyre Architects
were appointed to design this new swimming pool and leisure complex following a RIBA
competition in September 2009.
The new pool complex will include a six lane, 25 metre competition pool, a combined learner/diving pool with one and three metre boards, indoor leisure pool with flume, outdoor waters, a health and fitness centre, café and flexible studio space for other activities.
Details of the leisure waters are currently being finalised as are proposals for the adjoining areas to the east and west of the new pool.
The site, located adjacent to the west of the existing Aquarena on the seafront and close to the town centre, presents an exciting development opportunity on a unique seafront site. The design aims to maximise the potential of the site with ‘ribbons’ of accommodation flowing from north to south to emphasise the connection between land and sea with an outside terrace opening up the façade to animate the beachfront elevation and enlivening this prominent location in line with the Council’s aspirations for an Active Beach Zone
.
